Abstract Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is the most widely used gaseous insulating material in the power industry. Owing to SF6 is highly prone to causing severe greenhouse effects, prompting scientists to actively seek alternative gases. This paper systematically examines the structure, key chemical properties, property-oriented applications, environmental concerns, and research on SF6 substitutes. It elucidates the fundamental characteristics of chemistry in understanding and creating substances, enhances teachers' and students' comprehension of chemical research methodologies, fosters core competencies such as “macro-microscopic analysis” and “scientific attitude and social responsibility”, and cultivates the disciplinary core concept that “structure determines properties, and properties determine applications”.
