Abstract Based on the undefined status of chemical education as a scientific research field in China, this paper discusses the necessity of chemical education research, the origin of chemical education research and its international academic status,the comparability of chemical education research and chemical research, the characteristics of chemical education research, and the scientific principles of chemical education research.
