Abstract The Latest High School Chemistry Textbook published by the Commercial Press in 1903 is theoretical, practical, and operational. It is the earliest high school chemistry textbook in China and is translated by XIE Hong-Lai from the Steel's Popular Chemistry in the United States. This book analyzes the background, content system, value orientation, formal style, and compiled language of the book, and clarifies its important historical significance for the development of chemistry education in the late Qing Dynasty and the evolution of modern chemistry textbooks.
