Abstract Multicomponent reactions have become an important representation of green organic synthesis due to their simplicity, efficiency, and step economy. However, current university organic chemistry textbooks generally lack content on multicomponent reactions.Nitrendipine,a widely used drug for the treatment of hypertension, contains the important heterocyclic structure of 1,4-dihydropyridine.This paper presents an innovative teaching experiment,“four-component one-pot solvent-free synthesis of nitrendipine”,and applies it to a short-term innovation experiment course for second-year undergraduate chemistry students. The synthesis uses cheap and readily available starting materials m-nitrobenzaldehyde,methyl acetoacetate, ethyl acetoacetate, and ammonium acetate to efficiently prepare nitrendipine through a“one-pot”reaction.This experiment offers several advantages, including a short reaction time without solvents and catalysts, and the visibility of significant experimental phenomena.
