Abstract The Kelvin equation is usually employed for the description of the relationship between saturated vapor pressure and radius of curved surface on liquid. Many derivations of Kelvin equation were shown in different textbooks. In this paper, according to the state function method which is generally used to solve a thermodynamic event, a specific macroscopic process was supposed and the general form of Kelvin equation was derived based on the principle of phase equilibrium and the fundamental thermodynamic relations. This derivation method of Kelvin equation is helpful to understanding the nature of metastable state phenomena.
