Abstract  Using phenylhydrazine and ethyl acetoacetate as the starting materials, a novel 1,5-benzothiazepine derivative was synthesized by six-step reactions. The intermediate and the target product were purified by recrystallization or silica gel column. Their structures were characterized by IR, MS and 1H-NMR. Through this systematic training, the students can cultivate their comprehensive experimental ability, independent scientific research ability and comprehensive innovative ability.
