Abstract In order to observe the exchange reaction between active metal and copper ion, this reaction was designed as a slow-growing "copper tree" microscale experiment. By controlling single variable method, the growth of "copper tree" of active metal elemental substance, different anionic copper salt and copper sulfate solution under different concentration of chloride ion were studied, and the best reaction condition was obtained. The video of the reaction process was recorded with the combination of the smart phone and the macro lens of the phone, and the video editing software of the computer assisted the process of changing the playback multiple to observe the dynamic process of copper tree growth. Experimental results showed that under the best conditions, lifelike details of copper tree growth could be observed. The video after computer processing could be used in teaching demonstration.
