Abstract This paper gives a systematic covalent bonding analysis of SO3 molecule by employing valence-shell electron-pair repulsion theory, valence bond theory, orbital hybridization, and molecular orbital theory. It proposes that the central S atom in the SO3 molecule is sp2 hybridized. The normal and coordination σ bonds, and a delocalized bond existing in the SO3 molecule are also put forward.
