Abstract Because of the lack of consistency and systematicness in the basic organic chemistry experiment, an innovative experiment combining the reactions of nitroreduction and diazotization-coupling was carried out in this paper. Adopting m-nitrobenzaldehyde as raw material, the azo dye of 3-[(2-hydroxy-1-naphthalene)azo]benzaldehyde was synthesized by reduction, diazotization and coupling reaction without purification of intermediates. In the innovative experiment, two isolated experiments were combined systematically, which could make the students realize the internal relationship between basic chemical experiments. In addition, the innovative experiment could also be further extended to comprehensive experiment, which was more conducive for students to have systematic understanding and mastering the experiment technology, and to exercise their initiative exploration spirit and comprehensive practice ability.
