A good organic chemistry textbook should be a helpful tool for both teaching and self-study processes. A key factor that the textbook editors should consider is how to make it easier for the students to find out and acquire the essence of relevant knowledge. Combined with years of teaching experience, the authors supplemented some original “learning tips” into the new edition of organic chemistry textbook. We believe that these easily understood tips can help students comprehend difficult knowledge points, clarify confusing concepts, integrate related knowledge, and also can stimulate students’ interests in scientific research. This paper introduces the conception, contents and expected achievements of these tips with some examples.

Based on our online courses of inorganic chemistry, the blended teaching mode was firstly introduced into the learning of element chemistry with Chaoxing learning platform as the carrier. A new teaching strategy of “MOOC+cases intensive teaching+QQ group assistance” was designed. The low-level knowledge can be acquired by students from MOOC, while the learning of high-level knowledge was conducted by targeted live broadcast, group task, and PBL teaching methods. In addition, as a powerful auxiliary tool, QQ groups were used for online tutoring anytime. The classroom, the mobile terminal, and the management end were connected by Chaoxing learning platform, promoting the online and offline discussion and interaction between teachers and students, ultimately favored the pleasant and high efficient intelligent teaching and learning. The survey shows that the blended-learning mode based on “one platform and three terminals” was accepted by most of students.

Molecular structure and intermolecular forces form a connecting link between macroscopic world and micro world. However, under the guidance of “emerging engineering”, chemistry teaching content should be concise in order to strengthen the application-oriented characteristic of specialty. According to the learning situation of engineering students in recent years, the mistaken and confused part about covalent theory, intermolecular forces and ionic polarization is discussed. The purpose is to make students better switch between the macro world and the micro world in the process of understanding the material world, and learn to predict or explain the properties and changes of matter. At the same time, the cultivation of chemical core quality and moral education quality is carried out.

Combined with the analysis of reagent dosage, reaction time and significance test, the following results were obtained. Potassium dichromate, potassium iodate and potassium bromate can be used to calibrate sodium thiosulfate solution. When potassium bromate is used as the reference material, the amount of reagent is small, the reaction time is short, the experimental cost is low and the end point is easy to observe. The results show that the two-sided t-test meet the statistical requirements and is more suitable for the calibration of sodium thiosulfate solution.

Because of the lack of consistency and systematicness in the basic organic chemistry experiment, an innovative experiment combining the reactions of nitroreduction and diazotization-coupling was carried out in this paper. Adopting m-nitrobenzaldehyde as raw material, the azo dye of 3-[(2-hydroxy-1-naphthalene)azo]benzaldehyde was synthesized by reduction, diazotization and coupling reaction without purification of intermediates. In the innovative experiment, two isolated experiments were combined systematically, which could make the students realize the internal relationship between basic chemical experiments. In addition, the innovative experiment could also be further extended to comprehensive experiment, which was more conducive for students to have systematic understanding and mastering the experiment technology, and to exercise their initiative exploration spirit and comprehensive practice ability.

In order to improve the teaching effect and promote the construction and development of general chemistry laboratory experiments teaching resources, a series of micro-videos about the operational skills are designed. The production process of micro-video is introduced in details. A teaching method based on micro-video can effectively compensate for the disadvantages of traditional experimental teaching, enhance the accuracy of teaching, inspire the students’ initiative, improve the teaching effect and promote the reform of teaching mode. Results may provide a reference to the reformation of chemistry experimental teaching. The micro-videos can be applied in other universities due to short content, high definition and extensive applicability.

In the national standard, the cold solvent indicator titration method is adopted to determine the acid value of edible oils, which has the advantages of the simple laboratory instruments, easily got reagents and convenient operation. Introducing national standard method into the zetetic experiment teaching content can stimulate students’ interests and improve the ability of autonomous learning, problem solving skills. However, the method was not suitable for direct application so we carried on the corresponding improvement, including using constant burette instead of micro burette, reducing the concentration of titrant, adopting cyclohexane as solvent to improve security, enhancing stability of titration terminal point by adding deionized water near the end of titration. In teaching practice, we adopted the student-centered teaching method and problem-oriented teaching mode to cultivate students’ ability of knowledge integration and application. This was conducive to cultivate high qualities and innovative talents.
