Abstract This study investigated chemistry majors in a “Double First-Class” university on their needs in international academic journal paper writing through questionnaires and interviews. It was found that students’ needs were higher for co-operative teaching, involving teamwork between English writing teachers and chemistry teachers, aided by editors and librarians to improve their academic literacy, and timely feedback on writing. It is noteworthy that students have the highest demand for personalized, one-on-one tutoring. This study is a valuable reference for designing and implementing such a course in universities, especially in “Double First-Class” universities.
