Abstract The innovative design experiment was obtained by combining the response surface methodology with the research on the extraction of Chinese herbal volatile oil and after investigating its antioxidant activity. Then, this innovative design experiment is set up for the specialty of traditional Chinese medicine. By discussing the process conditions such as the solid-liquid ratio, soaking time, and extraction time, the students can master the theoretical knowledge of extraction in analytical chemistry and inorganic chemistry. Through response surface analysis of different process conditions, the students can master the principle and operation steps of the response surface optimization method. Through the study of the antioxidant properties of volatile oil,the students can make clear the use of ultraviolet spectrophotometer in instrumental analysis. To sum up, the implementation of this innovative design experiment not only improves students' mastery of basic experimental skills but also improves students' innovative ability and comprehensive scientific research ability.
