Abstract The splitting energy of the complex was determined by two methods, employing a colored cobalt (Ⅲ) complex as the carrier, combined with crystal field theory model and spectral analysis. Furthermore, a spectral chemical sequence was established. The impact of diverse ligand fields on the central ions was assessed by comparing the splitting energy obtained through methodologies, elucidating the spectral chemical sequence in terms of metal-ligand interaction. To facilitate learning, we propose an “experiment+theory” approach that enables students to gain better insights into the properties of metal complexes and their interactions with ligands, providing valuable references for integrating theoretical and experimental teaching.
