Abstract  In 20th century, one of the most important breakthroughs in organic chemistry was the successful researches on catalytic chiral synthesis, also called catalytic asymmetric synthesis.Three chemists shared this(2001) year. sNobel Prize in chemistry. They are Dr.WilliamS.Knowles,previously atMonsanto Company,St. Louis,Missouri,USA; Professor Ryoji Noyori,Nagoya University,Chikusa,Nagoya,Japan and Professor K.Barry Sharpless,The ScrippsResearch Institute,La Jolla,California,USA.The Royal SwedishAcademyofSciences rewarded the three outstanding researchers fortheiroriginal contributions tothe developmentof catalytic asymmetric pharmaceutical products and other bbiologically active substances. The fundamental principles, experimental techniques and industrial applications of the catalytic chiral/asymmetric synthesis and the achievements and contributions of these three chemists would be exemplified briefly.
