Show Abstract ( 19 )
Based on Bloom's taxonomy theory of educational objectives, and on the basis of the division of core literacy and its level of chemistry discipline, this paper makes statistical analysis and comparison of after-school exercises of “sulfur and its compounds” in different versions of senior high school chemistry textbooks from three dimensions of core literacy level, knowledge and cognition. The results indicate that in terms of core competencies, the three editions of textbooks mainly design exercises on the first and second levels of core competencies, highlighting “macro identification and micro analysis”; More emphasis is placed on the examination of “procedural knowledge” in the knowledge dimension; In terms of cognitive dimension, the three versions of textbooks focus on the levels of “understanding” “application” and “analysis”, but each has its own emphasis. Based on this, suggestions for using textbook exercises are proposed.

Digital Experiment of Handheld Technology Promotes Model Construction in Chemical Teaching: Precipitation Dissolution Equilibrium

ZHU Cheng-Dong
Chinese Journal of Chemical Education. 2023, 44 (19): 41-45. ;  doi: 10.13884/j.1003-3807hxjy.2022100059

Show Abstract ( 19 )
Four groups of digital experimental situations were created to transform the more abstract precipitation dissolution equilibrium into a simple curve representation. The students actively solved the problems associated with the curve and progressive layer by layer. While solving the problems, they recognized the “solubility” of insoluble electrolytes, constructed a precipitation dissolution equilibrium model, understood the concept of solubility product through quantitative calculation, and judged the movement of equilibrium using the relationship between Q and Ksp. Among them, the digital experiment of turbidity measurement with turbidity meter sensor solved the problem that adding sodium carbonate solution to calcium carbonate saturated solution can not observe the phenomenon of solution becoming turbid with naked eyes.

Under the concept of “structure determines nature”, this course is based on the “exploring the structure of flammable ice” to teach “using multiple theoretical models to analyze, explain and predict the spatial structure of molecules”,taking “combustible ice” as the object of study. Through three core activities including “recognition of methane molecule, using ‘balloon’ to recognize water molecule and recognition of ‘ice cage’ consisted of water molecule”, this course constructs a thinking path, which utilizes hybrid orbital theory model and hydrogen bond model jointly to interpret molecule structure and utilizes valence shell electron pair theory model to predict molecule structure. The final goal is to reveal the diversity and complexity of the covalent molecule through the process of solving actual problems.

Transdisciplinary practice is a bond of integrated development of core competency among various academic disciplines. Taking “iron-system food deoxidizer” as the activity theme, the instructors attempted to excavate related transdisciplinary knowledge and skills and then implement four sub-activitys: analyzing composition of materials, designing technological process, detecting deoxidization effect, and testing bacterial colony amount. This transdisciplinary practice aimed to facilitate students’ formation of the concept of elements and transformation and develop their scientific attitudes as well. Moreover, it was purported to improve students’ higher-order thinking in analysis, evaluation, creation, and help them construct the crosscutting concept of cause and effect.

Using a device composed of constant pressure separatory funnel and a distillation flask, the reaction between saturated brine and calcium carbide is a common method for preparing acetylene in the laboratory. This experiment produces a large amount of paste-like Ca(OH)2 precipitation, and there are problems such as too fast reaction rate, uncontrollable reaction process, unstable air flow, and foam rushing out with the gas to block the conduit. In this paper, 7 mm glass beads were mixed with calcium carbide in a drop-type gas generator, and 10% ammonium chloride solution was used as the reaction solution to prepare acetylene. By the method, the problems in the laboratory preparation of acetylene were solved and the efficiency of preparation of acetylene was improved.

In 2002, a systematic reform called Curriculum for Excellence was launched in Scotland, this paper analyzed the Scottish senior secondary chemistry curriculum in terms of curriculum philosophy, curriculum objectives, content structure, form of expression, implementation and assessment. The main features of the curriculum were as follows: (1)The curriculum philosophy of senior secondary chemistry reflected the “skills orientation” and “people orientation” of the Curriculum for Excellence reform, and the nature of the curriculum emphasized that chemistry was the science of matter.(2)The objectives of the curriculum emphasized the development of interest and the integration of knowledge, skills and understanding. (3)The content of the curriculum showed continuity between years, with an emphasis on simplicity, topicality and practicality.(4) Teachers’ teaching philosophy changed from teaching subject content to teaching skills, with emphasis on student learning initiatives and suggestions for achieving curriculum objectives through practical activities and flexible curriculum organization.(5) Emphasis was placed on assessment to facilitate teaching and learning, and on the diversity of assessment subjects and assessment dimensions. The Scottish senior secondary chemistry curriculum framework provided ideas and content that could be drawn on for the reform of the senior secondary chemistry curriculum in China.
