Abstract Ether bond cleavage reactions not only represent important teaching contents in fundamental organic chemistry course, but also have widespread applications in various aspects. Lignin is an important type of biomass resource, and its degradation research is of great significance. This article summarizes the recent progress on photochemical and electrochemical degradation of lignin β-O-4 units, which can provide appropriate application case for teaching ether bond cleavage reaction and thus expand students’ scientific horizons.
