Abstract  The characteristics and the importance of the course design for principles of chemical engineering were introduced. Application of the process simulation software Aspen Plus in teaching of the course design was explained by an example. DSTWU model was used for short-cut method for design calculation, sensitivity analysis was used for optimization process, RadFrac model was used for strict rectifying calculation, tray or packing sizing and rating. The result was compared with that of manual calculation. Practical experience showed that the teaching approach of the combination of process simulation software and traditional course design extended the subjects scope, enhanced efficiency and quality of the course design, strengthened engineering consciousness of the students, and improved the teaching quality.
