Abstract This paper introduced the setting and presentation forms of the contents for atomic structure in British Salters Advanced Chemistry textbooks, and summarized four characteristics of the contents setting:(1) Using chemical storylines as a main line to highlight the importance of context in studying chemistry; (2) Attaching importance to the linkages among subjects to improve the students' all-round development; (3) Attaching importance to the coherence of the contents setting, principles and process; (4) Attaching importance to the effective combination of graphic system and chemical ideas to make the abstract into concrete. Finally, some enlightenments of compiling chemistry textbooks were briefly summarized.
