Abstract Using halohydrocarbon as an example, this paper introduced the important role of Gaussian software in assisting classroom teaching. The geometric structures of intermediates and transition states in halohydrocarbon participated substitution and elimination reactions were visually shown by theoretical calculation. The detailed change process of structure and energy information along the whole reaction pathway was also obtained, which could help high school students understand the nature of chemical bond. Moreover, the introduction of Gaussian made the classroom more active and lively, and laid the basis of college chemistry learning.
