Overview and Prospect of Rhodiola Rosea Research

Abstract  Rhodiolas are a kind of rare Chinese medicines which usually grow in the alpine region. Their stems and roots are used as medicines for a long history. Among the variety of Rhodiolas the value of Rhodiola Rosea is highest, since it contains a kind of unique ingredients named Rosavins. This review focuses on the medicinal functions of the active ingredients of Rhodiola Rosea and introduces the methods of extracting the corresponding active ingredients containing in Rhodiola Rosea. Furthermore the chemical and biosynthetic methods of Rosavins are described. It also provides some useful references for the further development and utilization of Rhodiola Rosea active ingredients.
