Comprehensive Innovative Design Experiment:Application of “Homogeneous Reaction, Heterogeneous Recovery” [PIMPS]H2PW12O40 Bifunctional Catalyst in Esterification and Oxidation Reaction

Abstract Sulfonic acid ionic liquids and polyoxometalate catalysts are two kinds of efficient and environment-friendly catalysts and have been widely applied in the organic reactions in recent years. The assembly of two kinds of catalysts into one component bifunctional environmental catalysts to replace the strong corrosive and strong oxidizing concentrated sulfuric acid is the direction of future organic experiment reform. [PIMPS]H2PW12O40 (PIMPS=1-propyl-3-sulfopropyl imidazolium sulfonate) catalyst was synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and IR, and then the catalyst was applied to the synthesis of ethyl benzoate and the oxidation of thioanisole. The results showed that the catalyst has the bifunction properties of acid catalysis and oxidation catalysis and exhibited the efficient catalytic activities, which can be reused in the reactions. Additionally, it has the characteristics of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyst, which can realize homogeneous reaction and heterogeneous recovery in esterification and thioanisole oxidation reaction. Through the training of this experiment, the students' innovative ability to find and solve problems based on the concept of green chemistry is cultivated. It is helpful for students to deeply understand the concept of single component bifunctional catalyst and achieve the organic combination of theory and practice.
