Abstract Based on the knowledge structure of the teaching unit and the analysis of its supporting competence development function, current teaching situation and the analysis of students, this paper sets the unit goals and the lesson goals for “the composition and structure of substances” and designs the teaching process for each lesson. Setting the directive big idea construction lesson “exploration of the composition of substances” as an example of the big-unit teaching practice, cultivates students’ awareness of recognizing the composition of substances from the macroscopic, microcosmic and macro-micro perspectives, develops their core competence, conducting practice and reflection.
