Abstract In 2002, a systematic reform called Curriculum for Excellence was launched in Scotland, this paper analyzed the Scottish senior secondary chemistry curriculum in terms of curriculum philosophy, curriculum objectives, content structure, form of expression, implementation and assessment. The main features of the curriculum were as follows: (1)The curriculum philosophy of senior secondary chemistry reflected the “skills orientation” and “people orientation” of the Curriculum for Excellence reform, and the nature of the curriculum emphasized that chemistry was the science of matter.(2)The objectives of the curriculum emphasized the development of interest and the integration of knowledge, skills and understanding. (3)The content of the curriculum showed continuity between years, with an emphasis on simplicity, topicality and practicality.(4) Teachers’ teaching philosophy changed from teaching subject content to teaching skills, with emphasis on student learning initiatives and suggestions for achieving curriculum objectives through practical activities and flexible curriculum organization.(5) Emphasis was placed on assessment to facilitate teaching and learning, and on the diversity of assessment subjects and assessment dimensions. The Scottish senior secondary chemistry curriculum framework provided ideas and content that could be drawn on for the reform of the senior secondary chemistry curriculum in China.
