Abstract The Cannizzaro reaction experiment of benzaldehyde is a common classical organic chemistry experiment in colleges and universities. In this improved experiment, the solid phase grinding method was adopted and the raw material benzaldehyde was replaced by 4-methyl benzaldehyde. The improvements not only reduced the experimental time and reagent dosage, but also stimulated the students' interests in learning. It was also conducive to improve the yield of alcohol products, reduce the by-products and obtain the higher safety of the experiment. This improved experiment retains the comprehensiveness of the original experiment and integrates the new organic synthesis method as well. Therefore,it is suitable for the promotion and application in colleges and universities of our country.
