Interpretation of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2013:Chemical Experiment in Computer

LI Chuan, LIU Ke-Wen
Chinese Journal of Chemical Education. 2014, 35 (10): 1-6.
Full Text: PDF (1327KB) ( 90 )
Show Abstract ( 238 )
The Nobel Prize in chemistry 2013 was awarded jointly to three American chemists Martin Karplus, Michel Levitt and Arieh Warshel for the development of multiscale model for complex chemical systems. On the basis of many scientists' work, they combined quantum physics with classical physics and developed the multiscale model in which quantum physics is used in dealing with the heart of molecular structure or chemical reaction, while classical physics is used in the treatments of ambient matters or the environment, and dielectric model is used in the outermost layers. With the help of this model, theoretical calculations of the complex process of chemical reaction, heterogeneous catalysis and spectrum of molecules in solutions can be done by computer programming.

Show Abstract ( 226 )
Chaoshan Kungfu tea contains rich chemical culture. For a long time, in the breeding, planting, processing and tasting of Fenghuang Dancong tea, the people of Chaoshan paid close attention to the chemical substances including catechins, theanine, caffeine, soluble sugars, pigments and terpenoids etc, which affect the quality and flavor of tea, finely controlled the quantity and biochemical transformation of these chemical substances in production and processing in order to create unique quality and flavor, and explored a set of scientific brewing program according to the compositions of active components in tea. The culture of Chaoshan Kungfu tea fully showed wisdom of chemistry.

Comprehensive Instrumental Experiment of Synthesis and Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles

QI Hong-Lan, LIU Chen, FAN Xiao-Li
Chinese Journal of Chemical Education. 2014, 35 (10): 25-28.
Full Text: PDF (1804KB) ( 228 )
Show Abstract ( 242 )
A comprehensive instrumental experiment of the synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles was introduced. Silver nanoparticles was synthesized by chemical reduction and characterized using TEM and Uv-Vis techniques. The effect of volume ratio of reducing agent and silver nitrate on optical properties of silver nanoparticles and the relationship between concentration and absorbance of silver nanoparticles solution were examined. This experiment covers many basic experimental skills such as synthesis and instrumental characterization, with simple operating steps and direct characterization methods, so it is easy for students to learn.

Energy is a core concept of science education and also a hot topic in international science education research in recent years. On the basis of Liu Xiufeng and Wilson's study, a cognitive model of the energy concept was constructed. Combining with the related energy concepts existed in physics, chemistry and biology textbooks for high school and university in China, the questionnaire was designed to test and interview 280 Beijing normal university students major in physics, chemistry and biology. By Rasch model and SPSS data analysis, we found that different discipline background affects students' understanding level and perspectives of energy concepts, and there were some misconceptions. Finally, we established a cognitive progression of energy concepts based on cognitive difficulties, and gave some proposals for the teaching of energy concept.
