Applied electrochemistry is a course with intensive theories and wide applications. This paper discussed the application of numerical simulation method in applied electrochemistry teaching based on the example of copper electroplating. By computer numerical simulation, electrochemical process was coupled with gravity field and flow field commonly used in electrochemical engineering, and the solution of domain was computed by means of finite element method. Multi-fields coupling software could combine abstract equations with multi-media such as intuitive computer images and cartoons to help students to understand the electrochemical theory. Using computer experimental method to organize teaching was an effective way to improve classroom efficiency, stimulate learning interests of students, and develop their innovative spirits and practical abilities.

The synthesis of ethyl benzoate is an important content in organic chemistry experiment, the traditional judgment method to determine the end of reaction is to observe the phenomenon of water on the wall of reactor and the reaction time. However, the judgment can not accurately describe the extent of the reaction because it is qualitative rather than quantitative. In this paper, the internal standard method and external standard method of gas chromatography were utilized to monitor the reaction and determine the end of the reaction quantitatively. By using the modern scientific instruments, students can deeply understand the reaction principle, and develop a rigorous and serious scientific attitude, as well as improve their abilities of analyzing and solving problems.

Chinese Journal of Chemical Education. 2015, 36 (14): 34-38. ;  doi: 10.13884/j.1003-3807hxjy.2014080036
Full Text: PDF (1031KB) ( 321 )
Show Abstract ( 125 )
This article designed a quantitative experiment of nitrogen dioxide dissolved in water. The experiment indicated that when the test tube filled fully with NO2 was inverted in water, the liquid volume in the test tube would be much more than two-thirds of the tube volume while the liquid level in the test tube was basiclly stable after a few minutes, and the test tube would be filled fully with liquid if the experiment lasted long enough (14 h). Further study showed main possible reasons leading to these phenomena. First, it was related to the saturated vapor pressure of concentrated nitric acid when NO2 was prepared. Secondly NO can dissolve in water and react with dissolved oxygen. In addition, that NO can dissolve in dilute nitric acid may be one of reasons. However, dimerization of NO2 was irrelevant. That test tube could be filled with liquid may be closely related to the diffusion of oxygen in water.

This article focused on the rule of "4n light on" and its application to pericyclic reactions, electrocyclic reactions and migration reactions. "4n" refers to the number of π electrons in the reaction, "light" means the reaction condition and "on" refers to the symmetry-permission in pericyclic reaction and anticlockwise rotation in electrocyclic reaction. The rule can be used to conjecture the stereoselectivity of these reactions and provide crucial basis for prediction of complex and unknown reactions. Moreover, the rule is simple and easier to remember.
