Professor Au-Chin Tang was a great educator, an outstanding scientist and a distinguished leader in the field of education and science in China. He created a miracle of taking the responsibility for education, research and administration which has reached a very high level in these three aspects. In his brilliant life, he always took the needs of the Party, the country and the people as his own responsibility, carried forward the spirit of being willing to be a ladder and a paving stone with a rigorous, realistic and innovative scientific attitude, and fought tenaciously on the scientific and educational front of our country. He devoted all his life to establishing the discipline of chemistry for Jilin University, and made it soar into the forefront of China and become world-famous. He established the discipline of theoretical chemistry for New China, and trained a large number of senior talents engaged in theoretical chemistry research and teaching, who were praised as “Chinese School” by international peers, 12 of whom were elected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has made many high-level scientific research achievements and won respectively the first prize twice and second prize twice of the National Natural Science Award, which made China’s theoretical chemistry at the forefront of the world. As the president of Jilin University, he took the lead in putting forward the idea of “two centers” for colleges and universities, namely, education center and scientific research center. Through the practice of his concept, Jilin University has quickly become one of the world’s first-class universities. Professor Au-Chin Tang is a well-known educator, scientist and leader of science and education in China with profound knowledge, outstanding achievements and great virtue. The younger generation should bear in mind his earnest teachings, inherit his legacy, catch up with and surpass the world’s advanced level in science and education, and contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

In response to the development of chemistry and the need for knowledge structure to develop in depth and cross-integration in the cultivation of high-quality talents in chemistry, it is the core objective to improve students’ comprehensive abilities and cultivate scientific and humanistic qualities. College of Chemistry of Jilin University has inherited the educational ideas and teaching traditions of the older generation of chemists, forwarding the talent training mode with the characteristics of “three paradigms” and “four integrations”. It explores the effective ways to education and discusses the safeguard measures and achievements. The mode has universal applicability and can provide the basis and reference for the design of undergraduate talent training program and the arrangement of teaching plan in basic disciplines.

The chemistry discipline of Jilin University pays attention to the construction of the teaching staff and respects the laws of education. At the same time, we also encourage the senior teachers to play a “facilitating and guiding” role, and combine the development of the times to build a scientific, rational and efficient “three-stage” teacher teaching ability development system. While cultivating and strengthening the basic teaching skills of junior teachers, we should pay attention to the cultivation of new abilities of all teachers and build a platform to promote teachers to continuously study teaching content, teaching skills and methods. Integrating professional knowledge with advanced information technology and educational teaching methods, teachers can improve their teaching ability from “teaching” to “good-teaching” to “proficiency-teaching”. Inorganic chemistry in Jilin University was formed as an independent division in 1952. Seventy years later, the inorganic chemistry of Jilin University has established with a reputation to drive excellence in teaching, research and innovation. In this paper, we review our journey, our struggles and our achievements in building a common core-based curriculum with mapping and tracking system, developing chemistry textbooks that facilitate learning of fundamental ideas of chemistry, and infrastructures that encourage science innovation, and attract and retain talents. We remind ourselves that inorganic chemistry is a community whose story is worth celebrating, whose history is worth cherishing and whose future is worth building. We pay tribute to the founding members and pioneer faculty staff and affirm what they stood for. We are indebted to those who have shown their generosity and support in time of need to make what we are today.

The polymer discipline of Jilin University is founded in 1958, which is an important branch of the chemistry discipline of Jilin University. In the nearly 70 years of development, generations of polymer teachers of Jilin University have worked hard to establish a polymer major with the characteristics of science and engineering integration, and cultivated a large number of outstanding talents in the field of polymer science. Since its establishment, the chemistry discipline of Jilin University, with innovative chemistry and related interdisciplinary talents as the fundamental goal, has gone through the construction of the national basic science research and teaching talent training base in 1993, the implementation of the “top student training pilot plan in basic disciplines” in 2009, the construction of the “top student training plan 2.0 base in basic disciplines” in 2020 and the implementation of the pilot enrollment reform of basic disciplines (strong foundation plan), Through the continuous construction of the chemical base in recent 30 years, it reflects the evolution of the chemical innovative talent training mode with Jida characteristics of “thick foundation, strong ability and innovation”. At the same time, it can continuously deepen the teaching management mode, optimize the curriculum system, strengthen the team of teachers, and increase the construction of high-quality courses and education platform according to the development of disciplines and the changes of students’ knowledge structure.

Cross-fertilization of disciplines is an important feature of frontier scientific research, an important path for original innovation and new disciplines, and an important mode of cultivating top innovative talents. The fundamental purpose of cross-fertilization is to break down the barriers between traditional disciplines, cultivate top innovative talents through the integration of knowledge, conduct interdisciplinary research to create new knowledge, and solve the real-world problems. The International Center of Future Science, for example, by making full use of the advantages of interdisciplinary cultivation of talents, integrating chemistry disciplines and high-quality resources from inside and outside the university and from home and abroad, builds a multidisciplinary cross-research platform, creates a cultivation mechanism of “leading scientist-top platform-large discipline”, produces original results, and promotes original innovation in chemistry.

The inorganic chemistry course of Jilin University has good historical heritage and accumulation. Facing the new development and changes in teaching and learning caused by Internet plus and focusing on the comprehensive cultivation of the knowledge, ability and quality of the students, with the support of information technology, the teaching team integrates ideological and political elements and high-level thinking into teaching practice, and establishes a “three modernization, three integration and three levels” online and offline blended teaching mode:three modernization referring to the gradation of teaching contents, diversification of teaching resources and multi-dimension of evaluation system; three integrations referring to the integration of theoretical courses and experimental courses, the integration of professional knowledge and ideological and political elements, and the integration of various teaching methods; three levels referring to pre-class, in-class and after-class three steps of progressive teaching process. The progress of the fundamental theories in chemistry is reconstructing the whole chemical science. Theories under old-day pedagogic system fall behind the proceedings of modern chemical theories. Here in College of Chemistry, Jilin University, China, we start the course statistical mechanics and molecular simulation for the undergraduate students. Considering the features of the students, we rearrange the course contents carefully. We also optimize the pedagogy with the systematical development of students and the science development of the country. Especially, we concentrate the ideological and political educational elements, to help the students improve their core competence in thoughts, mental, and knowledge. We also give an outlook of the future of the course.

Experimental teaching plays an important role in the talent training system of chemistry discipline. The chemistry discipline of Jilin University has developed for 70 years. This article reviews the history of the inorganic chemistry textbook development at Jilin University. Since the reinstatement of the college entrance examination and student enrollment system in China, the inorganic chemistry teaching team at Jilin University has devoted tremendous effort into the development of the first Chinese inorganic chemistry textbook, its second and third editions, and the accompanying lab manuals, as well as the corresponding problem sets and solution manuals. All these books have embodied the wisdom of the inorganic chemistry teaching team at Jilin University, forming a profound historical accumulation. With the advent of the new century, a growing team of authors has emerged from years of teaching activities and a variety of brand new inorganic chemistry textbooks have been written to address the challenges of the new era. Through the effort of generations of teachers, the inorganic chemistry textbooks have been continuously developed and refined, resulting in a multifaceted and multidimensional, high-quality textbook system, which can address the needs of various disciplines and curricular plans at different levels. The inorganic chemistry textbook system developed by Jilin University continues to play a key role in the inorganic chemistry teaching at Chinese colleges and universities.

Through the curriculum construction, platform resource integration and open sharing, technical training, and students’ direct participation in scientific research, this paper explores the path for the testing platform to play a more important role in the cultivation of innovative talents. The analysis and testing center plays a more important role in personnel training, which could improve students’ ability to observe, analyze and solve problems, as well as in cultivating students’ scientific research thinking.

Since its establishment in 70 years ago, the College of Chemistry at Jilin University has always taken the integrity in education as its fundamental task. The College provides high-quality education to serve the society, the political activities, the consolidation and development of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics, the reform and opening-up and the socialist modernization by improving the training level of chemist. The all-round education emphasis its core concept on cultivation, its goal on ability, and its key point on versatility. The core goal of all-round education is to cultivate talents with both political integrity and ability and comprehensive development. The College has always insisted on the talent training mode of the unity of moral education and talent cultivation, the integration of “the first classroom” and “the second classroom”, and the mutual cooperation of professional teachers and ideological and political teachers. The College of Chemistry at Jilin University cultivates numbers of students with both political integrity and qualified ability for our society while it continues the red lineage of “both red and professional”, strengthens and improves students’ skills, scientific research literacy and comprehensive ability.

After studying in the university for a period of time,students’ comprehensive performance will show great differences, whichdirectly affects the knowledge learning and ability improvement of students, and also affects the quality of education in the college. Based on the theory of psychological research, this paper analyzes the objective and subjective factors that affect the study of high-quality students in college using comparison method and questionnaire method, and discusses the path to solve the problem and the “academic assistance” measures. This is not only a simple learning help, but also a whole process and all-round help to students’ growth, which needs to be realized by mobilizing the coordination and cooperation of all faculty and staff. The research and practice can support the undergraduate chemistry teaching and improve the quality of talent training.

The strategy on developing a quality workforce to accelerate the work to build China into a major world center of professional talent and innovation requires the comprehensive training of postgraduate students. Facing the current situation that postgraduate students are under various pressures and psychological issues, we should pay attention not only to the cultivation of postgraduates’ scientific research ability, but also to the development of their mental health. This article discusses the psychological stress of postgraduate students in the College of Chemistry, Jilin University. According to the method of positive psychology, several measures have been taken to relieve the psychological pressure and to promote the psychological health of postgraduate students in the College.

College students’ chemistry competition is not only an effective extension of experimental teaching in class, but also an effective test of the effect of experimental teaching from the perspective of students. By analyzing and comparing the process and effect of students participating in chemical experiment competition, it can effectively promote the reform of chemical experiment teaching, curriculum construction and the cultivation of innovative talents. In recent years, the results of students’ experimental competition in theCollegeof Chemistry of Jilin University have been significantly improved. On the one hand, the chemistry competition can stimulate the enthusiasm of undergraduates for chemistry and chemical research, and increase their subjective initiative in learning; On the other hand, finding problems through competition and promoting experimental teaching reform and curriculum construction in the process of solving problems are more conducive to cultivating students’ innovative consciousness and ability, so as to achieve the purpose of cultivating innovative talents.

At present, the development of higher education in China has entered a new era. The exploration and practice of management and service mechanism for talent cultivation needs to be carried out by university and college education staff. College of Chemistry at Jilin University takes full advantage of the policy support on title appointment, teaching competence, educational reform and curriculum construction. By improving the reward and incentive system and increasing counterpart funds, the College has constructed a “three-dimensional” guarantee system covering teaching, management and service for teachers and students.
